Micro: MACRO

For this project I have decided to base it on Natural Form. Natural Form is something I looked into during GSCE Art & Design and I thought it would be interesting to compare to see how far I have come since then. Another reason is because currently, it is winter which is one of my favourite seasons and I think I could create some beautiful pieces during this time of year.

3 days left

I have 3 days left of this project and I am fairly happy with my research and my samples, I now just need to think of a final piece. And I have had a little brain wave.

Heres a very quick child-like drawing of my idea.

I wanted my stop motion to have a sense of Journey to it and I thought that what better way to create this than by using a car. I plan on doing this by setting up my camera on a Tripod with my toy car right in front of it. My model will be far away so that it looks like they are sat in the car. Meanwhile, there will be clouds birds ect going by to create my journey idea.

Problem

I don't feel like today has been very productive. I have been trying to piece my photographs of Luke and the birds together but I cant find any online software that will allow me to do this. Im starting to think it would have been better to do it on the iMotion App because this pieces the photos together automatically and would save me lots of time trying to figure out how to do it myself!

Im also not happy with the fact that the plug socket and the door frame are in most of the photos, something I really should have checked before taking them. So if i was to do this again I would have set up the camera in a better place and used the app to make the stop motion. I don't think I am going to have time to piece these photographs together but I will try my best with the little time I have left!

The Dancers

Today we went into the hub to record the movement in the dancers using photography, video, sounds or just simple drawings. I conserntrated on doing some drawing using a sharpie recording the movements they make and layering them over the top of one another.

If I was to do this again I would have first drawn in pencil so that my final drawing wasn't so.. liney.

I also recorded the dancers whilst doing this to show where my drawings came from.

The dancers were asked to dance with powder paint for a peers final piece. So I took this opportunity to do a quick Stop Motion video as a sample. I really loved the way the power has been captured in the air in some photos.

Installation

As a class, we explored installation. We were given an old broken piano to which we could do whatever we wanted to it. I recorded our ideas using voice memos on my phone.

*audio will be added here*

We decided on going for a rustic, old, vandalised look with the piano, our idea was to sand down the piano and carv into it using lyrics, quotes etc. Also getting other classes involved, we thought it would be interesting to see what was written/drawn. We then planned on burning the piano (asking the fire brigade) but we havn't got round to doing this yet. Oh and we also smashed it up with a hammer!

Our idea was to place the piano outside with a key attatched to see what people would carv into it, and also, we thought it would be cool to see what nature did to the piano.

Sample 3

Today I am going to try my iMotion app to try to create a stop motion video.

I created this by taking photos, pausing it whilst I moved the birds. The app pieces the photos together and then allows you to change the speed of the video. I am really pleased with how this worked out and it was so easy to do! The only thing I don't like about this video is the quality of it.

Taking the quality issue into consideration, I decided to try it on my camera, this will also show the different techniques I am using. When I do this I will have to find some sort of online software to piece my photographs together.

iMotion App

I have found another app to do my stop motion video. It is called 'iMotion HD'. This app lets me take a series of photos and pieces them together, it also allows you to change the speed of the video. This is exactly what I have been looking for and I will be using this for my final piece.

Final Piece Idea

For my final piece I have decided to do something along the lines of 'Her Morning Elegance'. Just not exactly the same. Instead of on the bed I will be photographing infront of a blank wall with, for example, little paper cut outs moving on the wall to create a story. Im not sure of what the story would be, I was thinking of choosing a song and creating a story to match the song, I think it would make it a lot easier. This is something I have never done before so it could go either way, but i'm going to continue with this idea and do it to the best of my ability because I want to try new things during my art foundation course.

To do this idea I need to find some sort of software that will piece my photographs together to make the stop motion video. Im not going to use the 'lapse it' app because I am going to have to stop the recording at some point (to move items around) and this app doesn't allow this.

Her Morning Elegance

I have included this video in my project because it's probably the best stop motion video ever made and has given me a lot of inspiration for my final piece.

Understanding Stop Motion

''stop motion is a filming technique in which successive positions of objects are photographed to produce the appearance of movement''

I have been researching how people create their stop motion videos and I found a video that has helped me understand more about how stop motion works and how it is created. And some ideas are starting to spring to mind.

The Pen Story

Whilst searching youtube for some inspiration I found The Pen Story.

I have included this in my project simply because its such an amazing stop motion video. I don't think something like this is achievable in the amount of time I have but I really like the ideas of using the actual printed photographs.

Samples 2

I tried this type of video with Luke to see how it worked out. I tried to make it look like I have morphed into him. I think this would have looked better if the light hadn't gotten in the way as I was zooming out. But this is only a sample so it dosent really matter at this point. I think it could work better if I used other people rather than myself because I can control the camera better and can see whats going on.

Experimenting With Sound

For this project I thought I would experiment with sound. I decided to secretly record my friends arguing over how a thermostat works. I thought it would be good to record the most random pointless arguments people tend to have.

Samples 1

I was inspired by a video on 'vine' to make a video as if i am moving/effecting the person without touching them.. hard to explain.. have a look at the videos below.

This turned out to be harder than I thought it would be, it would take a lot of time and conserntration to do this idea.

I tried this too but it needs a lot of work to make it look better.

Lapes It App

I searched the apple store for an app to create stop motion type video. I found an app called 'Lapse It'. The app takes a photo every 2 seconds and pieces them together to create a stop motion video. I tried it out by just leaving my phone on the window to view the car park outside of college.

Im really happy with how this turned out. I like how its only the traffic and the sky moving, obviously the buildings will not move but I like the effect it gives its almost like you are watching the world go by. I set the video up to watch the traffic but my favourite part of this video is the sky. I didn't expect to see the clouds move and im really happy with the way it looks! I plan on using this app a lot in my project.

Stop Motion

While thinking about what I could use to make my video I came across 'Stop motion' which I thought was a really interesting way of videoing. I used youtube to look at examples of this and came across this one.

I feel like something like this would be impossible for me to do but with time and effort it could be achieveable.

I've had a thought

Today I have been thinking hard about this project and came across a video on 'vine' which has given me a lot of inspiration. The idea is to create small videos for my samples (maybe using the vine app) and then for my final piece, create a much longer more interesting video.

FF/PAUSE/RW

Today we have started the new brief Fastforward Pause Rewind and I have absolutely no idea what i'm going to do. This brief is totally out of my comfort zone and it's scaring me a little bit.

Graffiti

As an extra piece of work I decided to use my flower piece to do graffiti influenced by swoon. I simple just glued this on to a wall in the classroom.

Up to now...

Up to now I have got 4 days to go until hand in and I don't think I have got very far. Starting college a week later has put me in a bad position and if i had that extra week I would feel in a much stronger position so I am starting to panic a bit. So far this is as far as I have got and I don't feel like it is good enough for a final piece.

After getting feedback from my tutor I have been given the idea to carry on photocopying my work and keep sewing so that the sewing would build up and get thicker and hopefully will look more interesting.

Experimenting

To start my sampling I was thinking more into swoons work and I noticed how busy looking her work looks with lots of patterns and colours so I decided to try and create some backgrounds to start me off. When thinking about colour I couldn't think of anything better than marbling so I did some pieces, and then I did some simple drawings over the top just to see what it looks like.

I then looked at the back and decided I liked that side the most.

So I photocopied the back and planned on working onto the photocopies.

Artist Research

Most of the artist from my list are fine art painters and as beautiful as the paintings are, it is not my style of work and I feel I would find it difficult to reinterpret this in my own way. Although, I have found some artists that have interested me.

The first is Swoon.

What I like about swoon is the messiness of it. I wouldn't feel like I have to be too precise and I could be free with my sketches. If I was to do this in my own style I would make lots of different backgrounds and use lots of different materials and then do an ink drawing over the top.
Thinking about the colour in this artists work it reminded me of another artist that I had heard of. Her name is Marion Bolognesi.

I love the colours she uses in her work and how she dosent paint the whole face. This particular artist uses watercolour and I think it works really well.

Transcription

Today is my first day of my art foundation course and after being introduced to the brief I have started to look at a list of artists that have their work displayed in my local gallery. This project is called transcription so we have to basically find pieces of work that we like to use as inspiration to make a new fresh piece  of art based of a certain style of work.
At the moment I am feeling good about this project and I am excited to see what how I interpret other peoples work.
