Devoré

Today I have been sampling with Devoré. I am really impressed with this technique as I have never been introduced to it and is something that really apeals to me. If i was to use this again I would do a much bigger piece a turn it into a fashion piece. This sample was based on a lino print I did. This print wasn't something I put much thought into as it was just for sampling purposes.

Repeat Pattern

Thinking into Surface Pattern, most of it is a Repeat Pattern e.g. Wallpapers, Gift wrap and Fashion prints, so I thought I would give it a go myself. Luckily, last year, as a part of my Level 3 course, I learnt how to do this in my Computers in Art lessons (how I have done these patterns and my thoughts have been recorded in my sketchbook).

Textures

I then started to look into textures to create some prints. I took some photographs of textures I found whilst on a walk. I created a dry point print from one of the photographs I took of tree bark.

Im really pleased with how this has turned out. What I love is how much tone you can create with this technique and is a totally different result to a lino print. Although I'm not loving the colour I chose. I am going back to my love of subtle limited colour.

Fabric

Another way of going down the surface pattern route is to look into the fabrics used in the den. This seems like a much easier way of doing this idea and I feel I can do a lot with it.
My first instinct is to do some printing. I feel like printing is one of my strong points and is something I really enjoy doing.

So firstly I created a lino print from one piece of fabric used in the den.

I then layered over another lino cut I did based on another piece of fabric used.

Over the top of these two prints conbined, I added some of the actual fabric that we used. I hand stitched along the lines of the pattern on the fabric. I then used acrylic paint to paint a part of the pattern. If I was to do this again I would definatly change the colour of the paint to a more subtle purple.

Surface

Thinking about how to relate this idea towards me, I decided to look into the patterns of the den as I would like to encorprate print into it. to start this idea I did some rubbings from in and around the college to look into textures of surfaces as this is one way I can go down the route of Surface Pattern.

Reverb

For this project we started off by having a 6 hour site response day in Bank Quay Gallery. During this time we had to create something from thoughts we had in the building whether it was inspiration from inside or what we could see from outside. Me and some of my peers were in a small room with a whiteboard. We took ownership of this room and left like this was a sort of club, and every club needs a club house. So we went to a charity shop close by and picked up some old curtains and net curtains and then created a den using the office cupboards and planks of wood to suspend the fabric. We are going to be doing a joint project.

We then recreated the den in the studio at college using a booth. We brought more fabric and used tables and a matress, stapling the fabric to the walls of the booth. We decided that it would be nice to set up and photograph the den in different locations and sit in it whilst planning our projects.

The third den was held in my bedroom.

Hasan Kale

Hasan Kale is a Turkish artist who uses everything from fruit seeds to the wings of taxidermy insects as a canvas for painting Istanbul.

Frames

I felt like my Final Major Project wasn't fully explored and I could have done a lot more with my frames. I decided to do a quick photo-shoot with them as a little project along side my Micro: Macro project to possibly be used in my portfolio for university.

Latex Sampling

For some sampling I decided to trap some natural items into a tray of latex. This works the same way as a fossil would be made. To make it a little bit more interesting, I added some inks to the latex. After I left the latex to dry over night I cut out the items and this is what was left.

I do like this outcome although I dont feel like I can take it any further in my project.

Starting Macro

To start my micro work, I took a photograph that I took at a local park of trees and put it onto acetate. I then projected the image onto a A2 piece of paper and used a fine liner to draw the image.

I love how detailed this piece looks. I was worried that it wouldn't look like trees, but I think it's worked really well and I am pleased with the result.

I plan on taking this idea a little further with this same image using different medias.

I personally find it difficult to draw large scale, every time I tried to draw large scale, it would still be fairly small, no matter what media I used. This happened with a drawing of a pine cone. So again, I printed it onto acetate and projected onto paper.

PVA samples

To start sampling I decided to do some work with some PVA glue. Simply pouring PVA onto a flat, even surface and adding powder and ink has a really nice effect as the glue dries clear and you are left with a colourful thin layer of dried glue. The idea behind this was to sort of - create my own leaves. I used earthy, dull colours and crushed some leaves on to the top.

Once this has dried over night I then used the free machine foot on the sewing machine to work onto them. I started off by doing some simple leaf patterns and then progressed onto working from a photograph I took of the trees in a local park.

Paper Making

For this project I have decided to try to make my own paper not only because I want to keep with the natural theme but because I think working onto my own paper will work well and look lovely in a sketch book.

To make paper you simple blend tissue paper and water in a blender until you get a very smooth, runny consistency. You then use a mesh tray to pick up some of the paper, mesh is used so the water runs through and the tissue stays on the surface, you then carefully turn the tray over onto a towel and wait to dry.

This technique was fairly easy and I love the outcome.

Andy Goldsworthy

I have come across a very interesting artist named Andy Goldsworthy who is concerned with Natural Form. What I find interesting about Andy is that his work is made from 'Found Tools'. He makes art the same was as young children do whilst playing, experimenting with sticks of wood and pebbles etc. and seeing what you can do with it. The only thing we have to appreciate his work is a simple photograph as everything he uses cant really be preserved. Andy has inspired me for the Macro part of this project. I love the idea of using natural object to create art no matter how big they are.
